x350 Fireweed Seeds – chamaenerion angustifolium

Fireweed seeds are impossibly tiny little things that grow into big, tall, robust floral shows. In pristine conditions a single fireweed plant can grow to 6 or 7 feet tall or more, though most wild plants stop at 2 to 4 feet. Fireweed is a gorgeous, hardy, and prolific native wildflower. The plant is both medicinal and edible. In mid summer they begin to put out brilliant pink blooms. They continue blooming all through summer and into fall. Each flower produces a slender pink and green pod that, once ripe, burst open and send a flurry of snow-flake like seed plumes out into the world. Each seed is attached to a small puff of silk that can carry it on the wind for incredible distances. For our seed, we remove the plumes from all of the seeds to make handling and planting easier.

To establish Fireweed, sew the seeds in early fall and allow them to stratify naturally over winter. They may require 2 to 3 months of stratification, so if you live in a warm climate without a prolonged freeze, artificially stratify in a fridge or freezer. Directions for doing so may be found from many sources online.

We collect, clean, sort, count, and sell seed as a chance for others to propagate healthful, medicinal, and edible plants. We factor prices based on our time and resources, nothing more. We do not try to compete with wholesalers and re-sellers.

We STRONGLY encourage everyone to save seeds of their own! It’s practical, free, and addicting 🙂
