x100 Mixed-Variety Lettuce Seeds – lactuca sativa

$2.00

Our multi-generational mixed lettuces range from red and purple-tinged leaves to many shades of greens. There are curly, toothed, and straight leafed varieties. Most are fancier loose-leafed bunched varieties, with occasional romaine-style heading lettuces. Perfect as vegetables and ornamentals alike!

Our germination test groups determined:
– 15 – 25 days germination time
– 75% germination rate

I have been growing lettuce from harvested seed for 8 years. Each year our seed stock gets more refined to whichever lettuces preform the best for us. As always, we absolutely never use any chemical agents in or on our gardens or plants. Everything we grow is done as naturally as possible, with zero pesticide and herbicide use, using only richly composted soils from the farm. Lettuces are one of the first seeds I put in the ground each year. Even in our short growing season I can succession plant many crops for fresh leafy greens all season long. The leaves also dry very well. I like to plant lettuces early in the beds that will have later hot-season crops in them, like peppers and tomatoes. I can prune or harvest the lettuce when it starts to overcrowd the other vegetables and make more room in the beds. When seeding, I simply scatter seeds throughout the area. If they grow in too dense, I can harvest baby lettuces for baby greens and simultaneously thin my rows. When heavily fertilized, our lettuces are slow to bolt. Poorer soils may lead to faster bolting.
When the plant matures, it sends up tall thin stalks 2-3 feet or more. The stalks are dotted with a beautiful array of tiny flowers. As a self pollinator, lettuces are easy to harvest seeds from even when grown in a greenhouse!

We STRONGLY encourage everyone to save seeds of their own! It’s practical, free, and addicting 🙂
