Description

This is an individual chapter excerpt from the full publication “Re-Think: Small Livestock”. This chapter includes meaningful anecdotes, a touch of humor, and many color photographs of animals on the farm. For both the beginner or the experienced animal steward, there is likely something valuable to be learned. My publications are kid-friendly, I do not use profanity or explicit images. There is, however, discussion of reproduction and relevant information about anatomy. There is plain discussion of both breeding and poop. That’s just a part of farm life! There are no photos of death, butchering, or breeding. The publication does not contain information about medical treatment for animals.

This information is built upon first-hand experience, trial and error, and good old fashioned livin’ and learnin’ from years of raising, working, and living alongside these animals. I do not claim perfection in my knowledge. Some aspects of my knowledge and experiences may be incomplete. It is important to remember that there are 1,000 different ways to steward an animal, and 1,001 different opinions on what you should or shouldn’t do, what can or can’t be done. Consider this to be my own opinion, which will surely shift and expand as the years go by and I try new things, make new mistakes, and learn more every day.
So what do I cover in this publication? The basics, of course! I took the approach of “what I wish I had known…”. My aim is to answer common questions like:
“What should I expect when starting with this animal for the first time?”
“Can I keep this animal and that animal in the same pasture or pen?”
“What can I feed it, what does it eat?”
“How big will this animal get?”
“I want to breed my animals but don’t know what to expect or where to begin!”
“How long do the babies nurse?”
“How much noise does this animal make?”
“What kind of enclosure does it need?”
So on and so forth. I wanted this publication to leave room for little or no surprises for someone trying out a new animal, but to also be informative and insightful for the more experienced farmer. I cover basic terminologies, gestation times, dietary requirements, breeding behaviors, fencing solutions, and much more.
What I do not cover is medical care.
